AM Transmitter installed in Goroka, Papua New Guinea
In 2018, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry decided to extend the radio coverage by setting up a series of AM transmitters. The ministry went ahead and allocated sufficient funding for this important decision. This was to ensure that people residing in small population centres in far-flung places could get easy access to radio services. In many places, radio is still the only way to access the outside world, the only mass media reaching these far-flung places.

Opening Broadcasts of 4ZJ & 3XG
In 2010 Oamaru DXer Peter Grenfell donated these two recordings of “opening broadcasts” to us. The first is of 4ZJ, a short-term station broadcasting for the 1978 Scout Jamboree in Oamaru, the second being the start of full-time broadcasting from Radio Rhema in Christchurch. The quality of these recordings is less than perfect, but they are both interesting events.

After Cyclone Tracy devasted the Northern Territory city of Darwin in Australia, authorities turned to shortwave radio to help coordinate the mass evacuation of the city.
KDKA Shortwave in Pittsburgh: Four Locations
The first location for KDKA mediumwave and shortwave was atop the eight story high Building K at the Westinghouse factory at East Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Building K was the tallest building in this large manufacturing complex and the fledgling KDKA, studio and transmitter, was installed in a wooden shack at the western end of this flat roof.
Return to the Radio Scene on Bougainville in the South Pacific
Wireless came to Bougainville more than 100 years ago with the installation of Australian made AWA equipment which was taken into service in January 1916 under the Australian callsign VIU. In those days, many of the closer Pacific Islands that had been annexed by the United Kingdom were administered from Australia.
Brazil: The Early Mediumwave Years
The interesting story of mediumwave radio broadcasting in the South American country of Brazil can be traced back to its very earliest beginnings, in the year 1922, when a temporary demonstration station was installed in what was back then their national capital city, Rio de Janeiro. The Independence Centenary International Exposition, as it was known in English, was open for a little over half a year and it was staged as a 100th anniversary celebration of Brazilian independence.
Radio Malaya Singapore in Two Different Countries
By the end of January 1942, Japanese armed forces had scrambled down through the thick jungles and the multitude of rubber plantations on the Malay Peninsula until they finally reached Johore Bahru, facing Singapore Island. They then began sporadic attempts at bombarding the island and at crossing the waterway that separated the Malay mainland from Singapore Island itself.

It was on December 22 just last year (2020), that Germany celebrated its centenary of radio broadcasting with special radio programming to honor the occasion. Just 100 years ago, on Monday December 22, 1920, Dr. Hans Bredow and his fellow staff personnel at the Koenigswusterhausen Radio Station presented a special program of music and talks to honor the Christmas occasion.
