NZ’s Last Original Private Commercial Radio Station, To Stay Locally Owned

New Zealand’s last original private commercial radio station remains locally owned under a new media company.

Iconic community station, Radio 1XX is changing hands following the establishment of a new media company.

Media Bay of Plenty Limited will see the continuation of Radio 1XX’s deep roots in the Eastern Bay community and the incoming Managing Directors are committed to retaining the stations community focus.

“Radio 1XX has served the local community for 52 years and it’s vital it continues to be a strong and reliable presence in the Eastern Bay of Plenty,” said Managing Director Andy Galbraith.

He adds, “This change is an exciting time for both the company and the local community. The station will continue to provide quality programming and remain a valuable asset to the Eastern Bay of Plenty, while bringing a robust digital component to the brand to ensure it continues to be relevant in fast changing times.”

Andy & Sarah Galbraith are also directors of video production company Bullseye Productions NZ Limited.

Despite being under the same ownership the two companies will maintain their separate identities while working together under one roof to improve their offerings and services.

Former Radio 1XX Managing Director, Glenn Smith, will continue to work with the business in the interim, ensuring continuity and the preservation of the legacy he has built since joining Radio 1XX in 1974.

He says the change reflects the broadening scope of the radio industry and sees the additional offerings as a natural fit.

“For our local communities, their relationship with 1XX runs deep,” Smith said.

Smith adds, “The station has been a constant in so many workplaces, homes and vehicles for such a long time it’s become an institution. With the Galbraith’s experience in digital content creation this change ensures that local radio can continue to be effective for the next 52 years.”

Long-time announcer Colin Magee says the change is a positive move for both staff and the wider community.

“In my career I have experienced eight restructures.” He continues, “This one is the best-case scenario of them all, as unlike the others, there won’t be cutbacks or job losses, but growth and new opportunities. It’s a very exciting chapter for us all.”

All Radio Bay of Plenty brands are included in the sale including Radio 1XX, Bayrock and Q97 with expanded offerings to clients.

Andy Galbraith will lead the team as Station Manager.
