A new radio station celebrating youth culture is hitting the airwaves in Invercargill.

Ifinity FM broadcasts on 87.7FM and will play a variety of music genres targeting youth audiences.

Station co-owner Greg Selman said the idea for the station arose after he returned to Invercargill from Hamilton, where he had been running a radio station, and noticed a gap in the southern market.

After chatting with friends about that gap, the idea for Ifinity was born, he said.

The station’s main format would feature rock, dub, house, and “old-school Kiwi” music, but there would be specialty shows at night, he said.

A talkback programme targeting youths was planned for Sundays and there would be a youth show Monday to Friday between 6pm and 7pm, Mr Selman said.

The transmitter was turned on on Tuesday and while the station’s official format was not yet playing, feedback had so far been excellent, he said.

“People are just jumping on board,” he said.

The station was looking for more announcers and anyone with an interest in radio, or a talent for broadcasting should contact the Ifinity team, Mr Selman said.
