School newsletter hits the airwaves

Taihape Area School radio station 88.1FM has added to its programming by broadcasting the school’s weekly newsletter at 2pm and 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
The teacher responsible for the radio station, Harry Nichol, said the programme is being created and produced by a team of students from year 9 and 10. On Wednesday mornings, team members take their microphones and interview newsletter contributors, such as teachers, students and support staff.
“They bring back their recordings and edit them using the Audacity audio programme on the laptops.
“The items are then passed on to the editor [another student], who mixes them with the intro music (and other audio attention-seeking sounds) and music tracks, to end up with a 20 to 25 minute audio newsletter.”
Adverts and notices are also created by the students for inclusion in the broadcast.
“A couple of the students decided that the programme should become more of a magazine, so they added a recipe segment.
“There is also a sports roundup from Dave Whatarau, giving the results from the weekend’s sports. As you can tell, this is growing,” Mr Nichol said.
As part of this option, students will have the opportunity to create programmes of interest to themselves, as well as normal broadcasts.
“Last term, we had three students who were into computer gaming and regularly produced a 25-minute programme about the new games that came out, as well as the music inspired by the games.
“We had Top 5 Music choices, as well as a Country Calendar programme from Tarata Fishing. It will be interesting to see what this year 9 and 10 group comes up with.”
For the younger students, Story Time is a 30-minute programme that goes to air at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays.
“Quite a number of juniors have been recorded reading stories and now they have been put together into Story Time.
“There is also a guest reader and students singing.
“If you want to know who is reading this week, you will just have to tune in,” Mr Nichol said.
“There will be different readers each week, so stay tuned to the best radio station in Taihape.”
