Kaikoura’s Blue FM Sure Can Do

Bigger ‘can’ for Blue FM

Old and new: The new Blue FM transmitter on a shelf alongside the old equipment, which sits in the beetroot can.

Never let it be said Kaikoura does not have its finger on the pulse of technology and progress.

Even Kaikoura-based radio station Blue FM is trying to keep up with the times.

Folk who have graced the airwaves over the years would remember the old beetroot can up on the shelf in the studio. This was not just for decorative value – it also housed the old 100 watt transmitter.

In its moves to keep up with the times, the station has installed a new piece of equipment that should see its signal reaching audiences as far away as Wellington and Banks Peninsula.

With the new 300 watt transmitter in place, listeners in the Kaikoura region should get a clearer, stronger and more consistent signal from the independent station on 100.3FM.

Blue FM co-owner and manager Kevin Heays said the new transmitter was a significant dollar and service investment in the station.

“It ensures a higher degree of broadcast reception and some considerable distance improvement, enabling local organisations and events to be marketed further afield.”

The station appreciated the support from listeners and advertisers and to its many volunteer hosts and helpers.

“Their assistance has enabled this welcome addition to the station’s technology and hopefully, its sustainability,” he said.
