The Radio Network Nelson general manager Mike McElhinney is leaving his post this Friday after more than 20 years in the radio industry.
He said he was going to have a well-deserved break, “and I have got a few other irons in the fire. The plan is to stay in Nelson and to put some effort into the Nelson Jazz Club.”
Mr McElhinney has been the general manager for The Radio Network Nelson for 10 years.
He took over managing the Tasman region during his tenure as well, which includes Blenheim and the West Coast.
Appointed in 1991, Mr McElhinney was instrumental in restructuring the business, closing Planet FM and introducing ZM to the market.
This was followed by the launch of Hauraki and Coast FM.
Mr McElhinney said: “I have pretty much completed the projects that I came in to do and I have absolutely thoroughly enjoyed it.” He liked how The Radio Network Nelson engaged with the community, especially as a corporate sponsor of organisations like the Nelson Region Hospice Trust.
Mr McElhinney started working in the radio industry as a producer in Invercargill in 1975.
He said he was now looking at getting involved in other areas of business, in project or change management roles.
The Radio Network group general manager Colin Caldwell said Mr McElhinney was a strong contributor as general manager for Nelson and the Tasman region. Mr Caldwell said his experience and passion landed him a number of industry awards.
Christchurch general manager Andrew Britt was in Nelson to look after the region on a temporary basis.
